The Russian army today claimed to have eliminated one of the last pockets of Ukrainian resistance in the Kursk region, the Gornal monastery, where enemy troops were entrenched.
"The former Gornal monastery, a combat position of the Ukrainian army, has been liberated. Enemy resistance has been crushed," sources in the Sever military unit told the RIA Novosti news agency.
"The monastery was an important stronghold of the Ukrainian army in Gornal," the sources said.
Ukrainian soldiers, who partially occupied Kursk in August 2024, have entrenched themselves behind the thick walls and in the basements of the monastery. In addition, to maintain control of a small part of Kursk, the Ukrainians have reportedly mobilized up to 300 teams of drone operators.
Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on Monday the resumption of military operations in Kursk following the end of the 30-hour Easter truce, which he declared on Saturday and was supported by Kiev.
On Saturday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky denounced Russia's failure to implement a ceasefire in Kursk or Belgorod.
Russian Chief of Staff Valery Gerasimov assured Putin on Saturday that the final phase of the campaign to retake Kursk is underway.
According to his calculations, 1,260 square kilometers under enemy control — 99.5 percent of the total occupied by Ukrainians in Kursk — have already been liberated.
The Kremlin's goal is to liberate Kursk before May 9, the 80th anniversary of the Red Army's victory over Nazi Germany.
In turn, contrary to what Zelensky claimed, Gerasimov stressed that the Russian army prevented Ukrainian troops from entering the Belgorod region.
Russia annexed the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea to its territory in 2014 and later, on February 24, 2022, carried out a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
