British heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua has been injured in a fatal car crash which has killed two people on one of Nigeria's busiest motorways, which connects the country's largest city, Lagos, to the southwestern city of Ibadan. Distressing footage of the aftermath has now emerged.
As reported by The Telegraph, an eyewitness has claimed the incident occurred along a busy highway – commonly known as the Lagos-Ibadan expressway – in Nigeria where the vehicle Joshua was in, a Lexus Jeep, collided with a stationary truck.
It's been reported that Joshua, who recently beat YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul, sustained minor injuries and two people have sadly passed away as a result of the collision. At the time of writing, the circumstances that caused the crash are under investigation.
The incident happened near Makun, Ogun State, with distressing images of the incident having been shared on social media. Joshua can be seen sitting inside his Lexus Jeep as bystanders attempt to help the injured – including the Watford-born fighter himself.
Footage of the aftermath of the incident shows a dazed Joshua being held out of his vehicle and those around him offering aid. Images that follow show Joshua seated in the front of an emergency vehicle, speaking to officials to detail what happened.
In the clip, Joshua can be seen being tended to by witnesses before the wreckage and harrowing images of the victims of the crash are shown.
Local sources, according to GB News, indicate that Joshua suffered only minor injuries in the incident, though the two other individuals were declared dead at the scene of the crash.
Just hours before news emerged that Joshua had been involved, he took to social media to show himself enjoying some downtime following his fight with Paul in Miami. Playing table tennis alongside a long-term friend Kevin Ayodele, Joshua captioned the video: "@healthy_mindset dishing out table tennis smoke."
Nigeria is a frequent holiday destination for the London 2012 gold medallist as he has Nigerian heritage. Very proud of his connection to the West African nation, that's proved by his tattoo of Africa (which highlights Nigeria with an outline) on his right shoulder.
Speaking to Punch newspaper, an eyewitness delved into more detail. "It was a two-vehicle convoy: a Lexus SUV and a Pajero SUV. Joshua was seated behind the driver, with another person beside him. There was also a passenger sitting beside the driver, making four occupants in the Lexus that crashed. His security detail was in the vehicle behind them before the crash.
Other eyewitnesses and I began the rescue and flagged down oncoming vehicles to assist. A few minutes after the crash, officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps arrived.
Eddie Hearn Speaks Out Following News of Joshua's Car Crash
Eddie Hearn, the face of Matchroom Boxing and Joshua's promoter since 2013, has spoken to Daily Mail Sport about the incident. "I am away on a family holiday and awoke to the news of this incident," he said before insisting that he and his team are trying to contact the 36-year-old.
"We are trying to contact Anthony and in the meantime we don't want to speculate on how he is but thankfully he appears OK from what I have seen in the images. We are awaiting more information on what has happened and will update in due course."
The Daily Mail's report is of the understanding that Joshua was seated behind the driver of the Lexus Jeep, alongside another passenger, when the collision occurred. Four people in total were inside the vehicle that crashed, while Joshua's security followed behind in separate transportation.
