Experts in Cave Studies Are Missing in Cantabria

Two speleologists, specialists in the study of natural cavities such as caves, have been missing since Saturday in Cantabria, Spain.

The two young people, a boy and a girl from Castilla y León, had signed up for an activity with a company that provided the access equipment to make the journey independently. The expedition began at midday on Saturday and the 112 emergency service was unaware.

The two have been missing since then in the cave of Garmaciega-Sima del Sombrero, in Soba, and the search and rescue work has been followed live by the Spanish media.

This Monday, two teams from the Military Emergency Unit (UME) have been prepared, one on a search mission and the other on a communications mission, who will enter the cave to inspect areas that are off the beaten track, in case the two have mistakenly entered via an unmarked branch, the Cantabrian government said in a statement.
