French Singer Françoise Hardy Dies At Age 80

Françoise Hardy, French music icon, has died at the age of 80. The information was confirmed by the singer's son, Thomas Dutronc, via social media, this Tuesday (11/6).

The artist, whose hit track 'Tous les garçons et les filles' was the only French representative in the American magazine Rolling Stone's ranking of the 200 best singers of all time, published last year.

In 2004, Françoise fought cancer.

Career

Born in 1944 in a working-class neighborhood of Paris, the daughter of a single mother, she got her first guitar at the age of 16 and studied at a small music conservatory.

She managed to stand out in the noisy Parisian musical world of the early 1960s, where emerging stars like Johnny Halliday (neighborhood) charted their destiny in the shadow of Anglo-Saxon rock and roll.

Françoise Hardy is also a fashion icon. Her androgynous physique and discretion set her apart from exuberant stars like Brigitte Bardot. She was an omen of the elegance that would soon flood catwalks around the world.

With long hair and bangs, Hardy perfectly showcased designer Paco Rabanne's futuristic metallic dresses.

She became a model for magazines like Paris Match. The famous American photographer William Klein immortalized her in black and white.
