It's extremely rare, but it happened in Thailand. An elephant gave birth to a pair of twins on Friday in northern Bangkok. The birth was difficult and left one keeper injured.
Jamjuree, 36, gave birth to a male elephant weighing 80 kilos. But what surprised the keepers was that a second calf emerged about 18 minutes later. It was a female, who left her mother agitated.
According to Extra, the elephant ended up attacking the calf. A keeper intervened to prevent the elephant from hurting the newborn, but it ended up taking a heavy blow to the ankle.
“The mother attacked the baby because she had never had twins before, it's very rare,” said Michelle Reedy, director of the Elephant Stay organization. Both babies survived.
According to the organization, the birth of twin elephants is extremely rare, occurring in only 1% of the species' pregnancies.
The birth of male and female twins is even more unusual.
