This Wednesday, North American basketball is mourning the death of Jerry West, the man whose photograph taken while serving the Los Angeles Lakers ended up inspiring the current NBA logo, in the 'distant' year of 1969.
The information was released this Wednesday by the North American portal Yahoo! Sports, which reveals that the former player died "peacefully, at home", at the age of 86, leaving behind a legacy of titles and achievements within the reach of few, which made him an authentic 'legend' of the sport.
Jerry West took his first steps into the world of basketball at the University of West Virginia in 1959, before moving to the Los Angeles Lakers, where he played for 14 years, becoming national champion in 1972.
Before that, in 1960, he was one of the main figures in the United States of America team that won the gold medal at the Olympic Games, in the Italian capital of Rome, playing the role of vice-captain.
After putting an end to his playing career, he took over as coach of the Los Angeles Lakers for three seasons. Later, in 2002, he joined the management of the Memphis Grizzlies. Currently, he was an advisor to the Los Angeles Clippers.
