Nitric Acid Spill Causes 5 Injuries at the Ricardo Jorge Institute

Five people were injured this Friday after a nitric acid spill at the Doutor Ricardo Jorge National Health Institute, in Porto.

The information was provided by CNN Portugal and, in the meantime, confirmed by Notícias ao Minuto with the District Relief Operations Command.

According to what the same source told Notícias ao Minuto, the victims were injured due to "burns and inhalation of a toxic product". One of the injured is in serious condition and the remaining four suffered minor injuries.

All the injured were transported to Hospital de São João, in Porto. According to what the CDOS explained at around 1:00 p.m., "decontamination of some of the victims" was still being carried out.

Members of the Porto Firefighters Regiment, INEM, Porto Public Security Police and Municipal Police were present at the scene.

Fifth and sixth floors evacuated

Speaking to journalists, the commander of the Sapadores do Porto Fire Brigade, Carlos Marques, explained that the injured person considered serious had burns on his face and that the other four injured were victims of vapor inhalation.

"It was on the fifth floor, a container with 60% nitric acid was being handled and there was a spill. Vapors arose and there were burns on the face of the victim considered critical", said the operative.

According to Carlos Marques, the fifth and sixth floors of the building were evacuated.

"After having carried out all the material collection and decontamination of both the site and our staff, we are also measuring with a gas detector whether there is still any trace of the dangerous material in question", he added.
