US Submarine Arrives in Cuba at the Same Time as Russian Fleet

"The fast attack submarine USS Helena is in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, as part of a routine port visit while transiting the U.S. Southern Command geographic area of responsibility, conducting a global maritime security and national defense mission." , stated the United States Southern Command (USSOUTHCOM), on the social network X.

"The location and passage of the ship were previously planned", explained USSOUTHCOM.

The arrival of the US submarine on Thursday came just 24 hours after a Russian Navy fleet - which includes a modern frigate and a nuclear-powered submarine - arrived in Havana on a scheduled visit that generated great anticipation due to to its geopolitical significance.

According to information from the Cuban Government, the Russian fleet will remain in the port of Havana until June 17th.

On Tuesday, the Russian Defense Ministry had informed that the squadron sent to Cuba would take advantage of its passage through the international waters of the Atlantic to carry out exercises that included the virtual launch of high-precision missiles.

After learning of the arrival of the Russian fleet in Cuban waters, the United States stated that it did not see it as a threat, but decided to monitor the movements of Moscow's ships in the Atlantic.

In Guantánamo Bay is the Naval Base with the same name, a United States military installation built in the southeast of the island, whose sovereignty is claimed by the Government of Havana as it considers it to be illegally occupied territory.

In statements released today by the North American media, the former president and candidate for the Republican nomination in next November's elections, Donald Trump, said on Thursday that he will not accept Russian ships off the coast of the United States.

"We want to see borders. We want to see a strong Army. We don't want to see Russian ships off the coast of Florida," Trump warned.
