Plane Carrying Malawi's Vice-president Found. No Survivors

Rescue teams in Malawi have found the wreckage of the plane carrying Vice President Saulos Chilima, but there are no survivors.

According to Aljazeera, military sources said that the remains of the plane had been located a day after it disappeared due to bad weather.

Along with nine other people, the vice-president, Saulos Chilima, 51, was on the plane, which took off shortly after 09:00 local time on Monday (06:00 in Lisbon) from the capital towards the city of Mzuzu, 370 kilometers to the northeast, to attend the funeral of a former member of the government.

Malawi's former first lady, Shanil Dzimbiri, was also on board.

President Lazarus Chakwera said in a televised address that none of the ten people on board had survived after the plane crashed in a forest.

The first vice-president elected in 2014, Saulos Chilima, a charismatic political figure, was very popular in Malawi, especially among young people.

In 2022, during his second term, he was suspended from office after being arrested and prosecuted for corruption as part of a scandal involving an Anglo-Malawian businessman.

In May, a Malawian court quashed the charges after several hearings. (Notícias ao Minuto).
