Portugal Opens New Document Recognition Counter in Maputo

"The objective is always this: how can we save people the hassle of waiting in endless queues - as you can see, there are no queues outside the consulate - and how can we improve the provision of services", he told the journalists António Costa Moura, Portuguese ambassador to Mozambique, after visiting the new desk at the consulate.

According to the diplomat, in the first phase, the interior space of the consulate is being adapted and a process of restructuring and improvement will follow "also through the use of new technologies and the digitalization of processes", to create "much better conditions of use for users".

"It's a whole fundamental process in which the entire consulate general team is deeply committed and with great pride and joy on the part of the ambassador, the entire Portuguese community that lives and works here and, naturally and first and foremost, for our Mozambican brothers who also have to make use of consular services", said António Costa Moura.

The Portuguese ambassador to Mozambique announced, on Monday, a plan to increase the response capacity of the consulate general in Maputo by 50%, with the aim of guaranteeing "reference consular services".

"Within the scope of consular activity, we also work to do more and better. In fact, in Maputo, a plan is underway to increase the consulate general's response by 50%, with a significant reduction in waiting times", said the ambassador, during the Portugal Day ceremony, of Camões and the Portuguese Communities, in Maputo.

The opening of the new specific counter for the recognition of documents certified by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Mozambique is also part of the Portugal Day celebrations.

According to a note from the Portuguese embassy in Mozambique, signature recognitions are the most common act carried out by the consulate in Maputo, "with more than 17 thousand carried out in 2023, around 41% of the total number of acts carried out".
