Russia Admits It Cannot Contain Refinery Fire in Azov

Throughout today, the fire spread to a second warehouse, according to the governor of the Rostov region, Vasili Golubev.

"So far we haven't managed to put an end to the fire," acknowledged the governor, adding that several hundred servicemen from the Ministry of Emergency Situations are still trying to contain the flames.

The fire - which has spread over an area of more than 3,000 square meters - has forced the mobilization of more resources.

According to official sources, the fuel tanks belong to the company Azov produkt, owned by the Italian consortium Decal Group.

On Tuesday, Ukraine claimed a "successful" night-time attack on a Russian oil refinery in Azov, which caused a fire.

A Ukrainian defense source quoted by the AFP news agency welcomed the success of the attack.

"Huge fires are raging at the facilities," added the same source, who requested anonymity.

Azov is a city of just over 80,000 inhabitants located in the Rostov region, adjacent to the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics, annexed by Russia in September 2022.

Ukraine has declared oil refineries and fuel depots in the Russian rear to be priority targets and the attacks have reduced production in Russia.
