It was in the 1930s that Audi designed what would be its sports version of a racing car for the road.
The German brand gave it the name ‘Auto Union Type 52’ and only now has it decided to bring the project to life, presenting its model this month in England at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.
According to Guia do Automóvel, the Auto Union Silver Arrows are iconic Grand Prix racing cars from the 1930s. However, few knew of the intention to produce a road-going sports version, equipped with a 16-cylinder engine.
‘We are thrilled to present the Auto Union Type 52. In its time, it was a dream that we have now been able to bring to life 90 years later,’ said Stefan Trauf, Head of Audi Tradition.
Auto Union AG, created in 1932 by the merger of Audi, DKW, Horch and Wanderer, stood out in the automotive industry, eternalising the four rings as a symbol of innovation. In 1933, Ferdinand Porsche's design office was commissioned to develop a racing car under the 750kg formula.
