China Wants to Defuse Tensions “As Quickly as Possible” with Ukraine

The head of Chinese diplomacy, Wang Yi, said today that the objective with regard to the war in Ukraine is to defuse tensions "as quickly as possible".

In a conversation with his Hungarian counterpart, Peter Szijjarto, the Chinese Foreign Minister said that "all parties should reach a consensus as quickly as possible on the principles of non-expansion of the battlefield, non-escalation and non-triggering of attacks in order to create conditions for a ceasefire and the resumption of peace talks."

The head of Chinese diplomacy also acknowledged Hungary's role in mediating to end the Ukrainian crisis, which he described "as constructive", according to China's official Xinhua news agency.

The head of Chinese diplomacy also expressed his desire to close ranks with Hungary to "join more forces that support peace, achieve a more rational discourse and move towards a political solution".

Szijjarto briefed Wang on "Hungary's recent efforts" regarding Ukraine, praised China's role as a peacekeeping force and agreed on the need to lay the foundation for a political solution.

The conversation between the two foreign ministers comes a week after Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who is also the rotating president of the EU Council of Ministers, made an unannounced visit to China as part of a tour centered on Ukraine and rejected by the European bloc.

Orbán met with Chinese President Xi Jinping, who told him that the international community must "create the conditions for direct dialogue" between Russia and Ukraine, because "it is in the interests of all parties to seek a political solution through a quick ceasefire."

Since the start of the conflict, China has adopted an ambiguous stance on the war, calling for respect for the territorial integrity of all countries, including Ukraine, and respect for the "legitimate security concerns" of all parties as far as refers to Russia.
