German-African Politician ‘Insulted And Attacked’ In Election Campaign

German politician of African descent Abimnwi Awemo was the victim of a racist attack on Thursday when she was pasting up election posters for her party, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), in Cottbus (east), the conservative party said today.

On the social network X (formerly Twitter), Jan Redmann, president of the CDU in Brandenburg, denounced that Awemo had been ‘insulted and attacked’, in an act that is ‘further proof of the brutalisation of some sectors of society’.

‘We support Abimnwi. We won't be cowed. I'm travelling to Cottbus this afternoon to support her,’ said Redmann.

As part of Cottbus, Brandenburg is one of three federal states to hold regional elections in September.

The elections in Brandenburg will take place on 22 September, shortly after the elections in Saxony and Thuringia, scheduled for the first of the month.

In Saxony, Thuringia and Brandenburg, the far-right party Alternative for Germany (AFD) is the favourite, according to the polls.

In Brandenburg, the AfD is expected to get up to 24 per cent of the vote, closely followed by the Social Democratic Party (SPD, 19 per cent) and the CDU (18 per cent).
