Mother Who Tried to Kill Her Children in Bilbao Sentenced to 16 Years in Prison

The woman sedated her two children and then tried to cut their throats, wounding them in the neck.

A court in Bizkaia, Bilbao, Spain, has found that a woman tried to kill her 9-year-old twin sons. The Public Prosecutor's Office asked for 36 years in prison for the defendant, who was eventually sentenced to 16. 

 

The court found the mother guilty of two counts of attempted aggravated homicide, with the aggravating circumstance of kinship and the mitigating factors of confession and mental disorder.

According to Telecinco, on January 1, 2023, the defendant “with the intention of ending her children's lives” gave them an “unspecified” amount of benzodiazepines and antidepressants.

When they lost consciousness, “she cut them both on the neck with a knife”, although the wounds were not fatal.

After giving them medication to keep them sedated for several days and injuring them, the woman phoned her ex-husband, who alerted the emergency services. 

The children were taken to Cruces Hospital. The 9-year-old twins were hospitalized for several days, but were not in danger of dying.
