Mozambican President Asks Police to Show Who Seek the Kidnappings

The President of Mozambique, Filipe Nyusi, acknowledged today, in Maputo, that combating kidnapping crimes still constitutes a challenge in the country and asked the police to bring their "masterminds" to light.

"To a certain extent, the cases of kidnappings [in the last five years] have been more clarified compared to previous periods, even though we recognize that their eradication continues to constitute a challenge for our National Criminal Investigation Service (Sernic) and other bodies in the law and order", declared Filipe Nyusi, during the opening of the XXXIV Coordinating Council of the Ministry of the Interior, which took place today in Maputo.

Nyusi asked the police to present to Mozambicans the "common men" of kidnappings in the country, as one of the mechanisms to stop this type of crime.

"Bring at least one principal, you will see that the narrative will change, because the principals are very fearful, we just need to take a certain measure and they will soon run away", stated the head of state, calling for Sernic's increasing attention .

The Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) recorded a total of 185 cases of kidnapping and at least 288 people were detained on suspicion of involvement in this type of crime since 2011, the Minister of the Interior announced in March.

"The city of Maputo has the highest trend and incidence of criminal cases of kidnapping, followed by the province of Maputo and, finally, Sofala, with a record of 103, 41 and 18 cases, respectively", declared the Minister of the Interior of Mozambique, Pascoal Ronda, on March 19th.

Also at the opening of the Ministry of the Interior meeting, Nyusi asked the Mozambican police to study clear cases of drug trafficking with a view to improving methods of preventing this type of crime.

"Now we are catching and we are even clarifying cases. We are catching people from the most complicated geographies, from the Americas, Europe, which means that the work exists and this has to be evaluated. Study these cases, it is not just a matter of news, of information , study", appealed Filipe Nyusi, pointing out the increase in drug seizures and the number of people detained in connection with this type of crime.

"When a criminal of this nature appears, evaluate how he acted, use more time to study the person. Take and study how he brought the drugs, how he thinks, how he lives, how he grew up, study his life to facilitate cases future", insisted Nyusi.

Still in his speech, the Mozambican President stated, in the last five years, there has been an increase in the number of police officers, justifying that mass training has improved the quality of services provided in the protection of people and goods.

"When there are few people, they cannot do everything and the massification has resulted in a more visible police presence in the various arteries of cities and towns throughout the national territory, with an impact on reducing crime rates", explained the head of State, noting that In the last five years there has been population growth and the expansion of cities and towns, increasingly demanding the presence of the police to protect people and property.

"The other reason is that crime is becoming more sophisticated, but also, no less important, we have people who, when they reach a certain age, need to rest and that's normal. When people are leaving there must be others who occupy those spaces" , added Nyusi.
