Russian Company Offers Rewards to Those Who Shoot Down F-16 Fighters in Ukraine

A Russian company will pay 15 million rubles (around 155 thousand euros, at current exchange rates) to the soldiers who shoot down the first North American F-16 fighter in Ukraine, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced today.

The prize will be paid by the energy company Fores, which had already taken an identical initiative in the case of the North American Abrams and German Leopard tanks delivered to Ukraine.

"There will also be a reward for the destruction of the F-15 and F-16 combat aircraft. (...) For the destruction of the first [F-16], the reward will be 15 million rubles," a company director told ministry, according to the Spanish agency EFE.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Monday called on allies to increase the number of F-16 fighter jets they have committed to delivering by the end of the year.

Zelensky claimed that Ukrainian forces want to be able to fight on the same level against the Russian air fleet.

Ukraine is expected to receive six F-16 fighters in the coming months.

Russia has warned that planes supplied to Ukraine will be legitimate targets for Russian forces when they appear in the combat zone.

Ukraine has received financial and weapons aid to fight Russian troops, who invaded the country on February 24, 2022.

Kyiv's Western allies have also imposed sanctions against Moscow's interests to try to disrupt financing of the war effort in Ukraine.
