Russian Fighter Intercepts NATO Planes for Third Time in a Week

Today, a Russian Su-27 fighter intercepted a spy plane and two British fighter jets over the Black Sea, which changed course after approaching, the third incident involving NATO aircraft in a week, the Russian Defense Ministry said.

‘A Russian air defense Su-27 fighter jet took off to avoid a violation of the Russian state border. The crew identified the aerial targets as an RC-135 spy and radio-electronic combat aircraft and two Typhoon multifunctional fighters from the UK Air Force,’ the Russian ministry said.

‘Faced with the proximity of the Russian fighter jet, the foreign military aircraft changed course and moved away from the Russian border,’ the Russian government explained, adding that the Russian plane returned to its base after avoiding the border violation.

The Russian authorities assured that the fighter jet's flight was carried out in strict accordance with international standards for the use of airspace in neutral waters and in compliance with safety measures.

This is the second incident of this kind in three days involving a British RC-135 spy plane and two Typhoon fighter jets over the Black Sea, following the one that took place last Wednesday.

Last March, a similar situation occurred with an RC-135 and two Typhoon multi-role fighters from the UK Air Force, also over the Black Sea.

In addition, this weekend Russian fighter jets intercepted two US B-52H bombers over the waters of the Barents Sea, causing three incidents in the Black Sea.
