The fire, which broke out this morning on the seventh floor of a building located in a working-class neighborhood of the city, may have been started by criminals, said the Nice prosecutor.
Seven people died in a fire in a flat block in Nice, in south-eastern France, the city's fire brigade announced today.
Former interior minister Gérald Darmanin confirmed on his X account that at least three children were among the seven victims. According to BFMTV, they are aged 5, 7 and 10. A teenager is also among the fatalities.
The fire, which broke out this morning in a working-class neighborhood in the city, may have been set by a criminal, said the Nice prosecutor. ‘In view of the first indications, I have opened an arson investigation that led to death,’ Damien Martinelli told reporters at the scene.
A total of 72 firefighters supported by 25 vehicles were mobilized to the scene to fight the blaze. Despite the considerable resources mobilized, ‘unfortunately, seven people died in the fire,’ the fire brigade said.
