The incident occurred at around 10am (03:00 Lisbon time) in a coal mine in the city of Shilin, when a group of workers were sealing a ventilation shaft.
According to preliminary information, a cave-in occurred, leaving eight people trapped underground, state television CCTV reported.
Rescue teams have managed to locate seven lifeless bodies, while the search continues for the missing individual, whose condition is unknown.
Last June, an accident in a coal mine in Shandong province, in eastern China, killed three people, while another in Heilongjiang province, in the north-east of the country, in May, killed five.
Coal mines - the material from which China produces around 60 per cent of its energy - continue to have a high accident rate, although the number of fatal accidents has fallen significantly in recent years.
China's mining sector recorded more than 3,000 deaths between 2018 and 2023, a figure that nevertheless represents a 53.6 per cent drop compared to the previous five years, according to official figures released last year.
