Young Woman Sentenced to Prison for Killing Abuser in the US

Chrystul Kizer was charged with the offence of murder for shooting 34-year-old Randall Volar in 2018, when she was just 17.

Chrystul Kizer, now 24, was sentenced to 11 years in prison for killing the man who sexually assaulted and trafficked her when she was a teenager in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

According to the BBC, Kizer was charged with murder for shooting Randall Volar, 34, in 2018, when she was just 17. Six years later, she decided to accept a plea deal to avoid a life sentence.

The young woman said she met Volar when she was just 16 and that the man sexually assaulted her, giving her money and gifts in exchange. In addition to the abuse, the attacker sold her to other men for sexual acts.

At the time of her death, an investigation by the Washington Post revealed that authorities had evidence, including videos, that Volar had abused about a dozen teenagers, including Kizer.

The man was arrested and charged with sexual assault four months before his death, but was released the same day.

On the day of the crime, in June 2018, Kizer went to Volar's house with a gun, shot him twice in the head, set his house on fire and stole his car. She was charged with premeditated murder and the prosecution claimed that her goal was to steal the car. However, the defense claimed self-defense.

The young woman also asked that her case be included in the “affirmative defense” law, implemented in some US states and which protects victims of some charges, including prostitution or robbery, if those actions were the result of trafficking. In 2022, the Wisconsin Supreme Court allowed the request.

However, she decided to opt for a plea deal to avoid the risk of being sentenced to life in prison at trial. “I can try to move forward,” Kizer told the Washington Post.

The young woman has already served more than a year and a half of her sentence and will have to serve another five years before she can apply for parole.
