Elections Postponed In Seven Municipalities In Russia's Kursk Region

Local elections scheduled for early September have been postponed in seven municipalities in Russia's Kursk region due to Ukraine's unprecedented military offensive since 6 August, the electoral authorities announced today.

‘The Central Election Commission supported the proposal of the Kursk region election commission to postpone the elections (...) in seven municipalities,’ it said in a statement.

Preparations for the elections will resume ‘as soon as it is possible to fully guarantee the safety of voters’, according to the same source.

The elections for governor of the Kursk region will go ahead, said the Central Electoral Commission, pointing out that these are early elections that will take place from 28 August to 5 September.

After months of retreat in the face of the advance of Russian troops in the east of its territory, Ukraine launched an attack on the Kursk region on 6 August.

At least 31 civilians were killed and 143 wounded in this offensive launched by Ukraine in the Kursk region, Russian medical services said today.

According to Kyiv, in more than two weeks of fighting, its troops have taken control of around 93 towns and more than 1,200 square kilometres of territory in the Kursk region.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky declared that one of the aims of the offensive, which has forced the withdrawal of more than 122,000 people in Russia, is to create a ‘buffer’ zone to prevent attacks on Ukrainian territory from areas bordering Russia.

Russia invaded Ukraine militarily on 24 February 2022.
