Tunisian President Sacks Prime Minister

The President of Tunisia announced this evening that he had sacked the Prime Minister, without giving any official explanation, replacing Ahmed Hachani with the newly appointed Minister of Social Affairs, Kamel Madouri.

Hachani had replaced Najla Bouden on 1 August last year, who was also sacked without official explanation by President Kais Saied, who has monopolised all power in Tunisia since his coup d'état on 25 July 2021.

Elected democratically in October 2019, Kais Saied gave himself full powers three years ago by sacking his then prime minister and suspending parliament, which was subsequently dissolved.

After revising the constitution in 2022 to introduce a hyper-presidential regime and elect a new parliament with very limited powers, he recently announced that he would run for a second term in the presidential elections to be held in Tunisia on 6 October.

Earlier, Hachani had issued a statement on meetings held at the seat of government, notably on the difficult situation of public transport.

Madouri, former president of the National Health Insurance Fund, took office in May, replacing Malek Zahi, who resigned at the same time as Interior Minister Kamel Feki, who was succeeded by Khaled Nouri.
