Afghan Woman Defends Women's Rights, Receives 3,000 Threats in 48 Hours

Marzieh Hamidi demands that the perpetrators "be identified and brought to justice".

Marzieh Hamidi, a former Afghan taekwondo champion, revealed on Monday that she had received 3,000 threats in the space of 48 hours, due to posts she made on social media in which she defended women's rights.

"I want the terrorists who threatened to kill me to be identified and brought to justice, so that I can live freely, without fear and in complete safety", the 22-year-old athlete began by saying in a formal response sent to Agence France-Press (AFP).

"The first phone call came from Afghanistan. A voice, speaking Pashto [one of the country's languages], told me that they knew my address in Paris. I received 3,000 calls in 48 hours. After that, I stopped counting", she continued.

"I have received death and rape threats because I have opposed terrorists and those who support them," she added. In light of the incident, French authorities have placed Marzieh Hamidi under police protection for an "indefinite period."
