A 22-year-old babysitter is being investigated after authorities discovered the bodies of two babies buried in the backyard of the young woman's home.
The case is shocking the small community of Traversetol, Italy, where the young woman was seen as a dedicated university student who devoted her book time to looking after the little ones.
The authorities say that a first body was found at the beginning of August. An autopsy revealed that the baby, Chiara's son, was born alive.
Petrolini, a law student, reportedly hid her latest pregnancy before inducing labor on August 7 and giving birth alone in her bathroom at home. Shortly after giving birth, she hid her body in her garden. Two days later, she left with her parents for a previously planned vacation in the United States.
On the day they left on vacation, the grandmother's dog discovered the body, which was wrapped in a sheet and hidden in a hole in the garden. This is where the investigation began.
The authorities accessed the young woman's cell phone and computer where they discovered that she had been researching how to hide a second body and last week, the body of another baby was found buried in the garden. Investigations are continuing into this one, but all indications are that it is the skeleton of a 40-week-old newborn. It could have been buried a year ago.
The case is shrouded in controversy and mystery as the question arises as to how the young woman managed to hide two pregnancies from a small and attentive community. And why Chiara was motivated to kill and bury the babies, given that she grew up in an apparently healthy environment.
The young woman's ex-boyfriend, who has already been proven to be the father of the first body found, said he didn't know Chiara was pregnant and claimed that if he had known, he wouldn't have allowed something like this to happen.
Chiara is currently being held on suspicion of infanticide and claimed to have acted alone, without anyone else's knowledge.
