Social Network X Says Access in Brazil Was Involuntary and Temporary

The social network X (formerly Twitter) has assured that access for some users in Brazil, despite the block ordered by the Brazilian courts, was due to involuntary technical issues and will be temporary.

The server change "resulted in the involuntary and temporary reestablishment of the service for Brazilian users", said the social network of millionaire Elon Musk on Wednesday.

"We expect the platform to be inaccessible again soon", it added.

The social network made a technical change in Brazil on Tuesday night that allowed it to bypass the block ordered by the Brazilian courts and allow access to some users, said the internet provider association.

The change was made because the block in Brazil affected the service for Latin America as a whole, explained X.

The change "resulted in a significant change in the structure", stressed, in a statement released on Wednesday, the Brazilian Association of Internet and Telecommunications Providers (Abrint).

"The move to Cloudflare makes blocking the application much more complicated," since, unlike "the previous system, which used specific IP [internet protocol addresses] that could be blocked, the new system uses dynamic IP addresses that change constantly," he said.

According to the newspaper O Globo, Cloudflare operates in 330 cities in more than 120 countries and serves large institutions, such as banks.

Internet providers now find themselves in a “delicate position” as they “cannot take action on their own without official guidance from Anatel [the Brazilian National Telecommunications Agency], as “an erroneous block could affect legitimate companies,” Abrint explained.

“Therefore, they are awaiting a technical analysis and instructions from Anatel to decide what measures will be taken,” it concluded.

On Wednesday morning, former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro celebrated the resumption of access to the social network with a post on X, in which he expressed support for Musk and described the ban as an act of censorship.

Given Musk’s repeated refusals to remove profiles of people under investigation for transmitting anti-democratic messages from the social network, Brazilian Supreme Court judge Alexandre de Moraes ordered the suspension of X in Brazil as a precautionary measure on August 30.

Some Brazilian users of the social network also celebrated the reestablishment of access to the platform, with several stressing that they were not using a private network virtual, known as VPN, to access X.

Alexandre de Moraes imposed a fine of eight thousand euros on anyone who uses a VPN or another service to hide their location to access X, which has around 20 million users in the country.

There have been no reports of any fine being imposed so far.
