The European Parliament Approves Resolution Recognizing González As President In Venezuela

The European Parliament (EP) today recognized Edmundo González, the main opponent of the Nicolas Maduro regime, as the legitimate President of the country, with the left-wing party in the chamber voting against.

During the plenary session in Strasbourg (France), MEPs approved a resolution with 309 votes in favor, 201 against and 12 abstentions, which recognized the opposition leader, now in exile, as the winner of the presidential elections on 28 July.

The joint resolution originated from two far-right political groups: the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR), whose main name is Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and the Patriots for Europe, led by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and the leader of the Popular Front (France), Marine Le Pen. Chega is part of the latter group.

According to Venezuelan institutions, Nicolas Maduro won the election and was re-elected for another term. However, the opposition and much of the international community are demanding access to the electoral records to certify the results. The opposition even presented opposing results, which pointed to an alleged defeat for Maduro.

However, the Venezuelan regime has not made the records available to date.

The text approved today in plenary urged European Union countries to make every possible effort to ensure that Edmundo González takes office on January 10, 2025.

Accepting a demand from the European People's Party (EPP), the resolution also calls for the arrest of Nicolas Maduro for "crimes against humanity and all serious violations of human rights".

The Left and the Socialists & Democrats voted against the text, and the Liberals refused to participate in the vote, after the EPP proposal was included in the far-right text.
