At Least 13 Dead, 33 Injured In Bus Crash In Egypt



A bus carrying university students crashed on a highway in Egypt on Monday night, killing 12 people and injuring 33, the Egyptian Health Ministry announced.


The bus was carrying students from Galala University in the eastern province of Suez when it overturned on the highway, according to state media outlet Akhbar al-Youm.


No other vehicles were involved in the accident and an investigation is underway to determine the speed of the bus and the circumstances of the accident, according to the same source.


The accident occurred on Monday night and the injured were taken to Suez Hospital, affiliated with the health authority of Suez province, according to a statement released by the Egyptian Health Ministry on the social network Facebook.


Egyptian Health Minister Khaled Abdel Ghafar expressed "deep condolences" to the families of the students from Galala University in Suez province who died "following the painful accident", wishing a "speedy recovery" to the injured.


Ghafar stressed that he had been fully coordinating with the Minister of Education, Ayman Ashur, and the university’s rector, Mohamed al-Shenawy, on the transfer of the dead and the provision of medical care to the injured.


Road accidents are common in Egypt, where traffic laws are not always respected and many roads are in poor condition. According to official figures, more than 5,600 people died in road accidents in 2023.


The Galala road where the accident occurred is one of thousands of kilometers of highways and viaducts built over the past decade as part of mega infrastructure projects launched by the government.
