Karim Benzema gave an interview to the popular Spanish television program 'El Chiringuito' and addressed the controversy related to Vinícius Júnior, having even admitted that he had already spoken to the Brazilian striker after he did not win the Ballon d'Or.
"I hope he stays strong. Yesterday I was talking to Vinicius and I know he is strong enough to work and one day win this trophy", he began, before detailing how the conversation went: "I wrote a message to him and he is very Sad, it's normal. It's complicated when everyone tells us that we're the ones to win the Ballon d'Or and at the end of the day, a day before or a few hours before, they say that it's not us after all.
"I saw what Vinicius did last season... but I don't want to talk about France Football. As I said a long time ago, and not just this year, also last year and when he was at Real Madrid, he is a player who has always tried hard and it's not just about scoring goals", said the French striker who now represents Al Ittihad.
Talking to Edu Aguirre, Benzema also said that "Vinicius was decisive in all the games" for Real Madrid in the previous edition of the Champions League and, for that reason, he believes that no one deserved the award more than him.
"I have nothing against Rodri, he's a good player, but when I'm on my sofa watching TV, Rodri doesn't do things that make me say 'pffff'... Vinícius has done it more than once", he added the striker, currently 36 years old.
It is worth remembering that Real Madrid decided to boycott the ceremony organized by France Footbal after learning that Vinícius Júnior, contrary to all expectations, would not take home the Ballon d'Or and that it would be given to Rodri, Manchester midfielder City. The Merengue club's stance has, however, deserved several criticisms.
