The US Senate today confirmed Republican Mike Huckabee as ambassador to Israel, a position he was chosen for by Donald Trump, notably because of his closeness to those promoting the colonization of Palestinian territories.
He loves Israel and the people of Israel, and the people of Israel love him. Mike will work tirelessly to restore peace to the Middle East!" Trump declared when he nominated him as ambassador.
On the occasion, the far-right Israeli minister Bezalel Smotrich hailed "a supporter of the colonization process".
The Senate approved the nomination by a vote of 53 to 46.
A figure of the conservative Christian right and an opponent of the rights of LGBT+ minorities, Huckabee was governor of the state of Arkansas between 1996 and 2007 and ran twice in the Republican primaries for the presidential election.
His daughter, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, was Trump's spokeswoman when he was in the White House for the first time, after which she won the election for governor of Arkansas.
In 2017, while in an Israeli settlement, Huckabee declared: "There is no such thing as the occupied West Bank. There is only Judea and Samaria. There are no settlements. What exists are communities, neighborhoods, cities. There is no occupation whatsoever."
