Deaths in Gaza Surpass 42,500 and the Number of Injured Approaches 100,000

The number of people killed in the Gaza Strip, where Israel has been waging an intense military offensive for more than a year, stands at 42,519, according to figures released today by the Ministry of Health in the Hamas-controlled territory.

In addition the figures already known, 19 more people have died in the last 24 hours, according to the health authorities' provisional figures.

The number of wounded is close to 100,000, with the Hamas Health Ministry putting the figure at 99,637, including the 91 wounded recorded since Friday, although the authorities suspect that the figure is higher, as there may still be people under rubble or in inaccessible areas.

This Friday, the Israeli government confirmed the death of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar during a military operation in Rafah, in the south of the Gaza Strip.

The ongoing war in Gaza was triggered by an unprecedented Hamas attack in southern Israel on October 7, 2023, which caused around 1,200 deaths and more than two hundred hostages, according to the Israeli authorities.

In retaliation, Israel launched a military offensive against the Palestinian enclave with more than two million inhabitants.

As a result of the war, Gaza is also facing an unprecedented humanitarian crisis, with thousands of people in need of urgent aid, according to international organizations.
