Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz today hit back at UN Secretary-General António Guterres for “not showing satisfaction with the elimination of arch-terrorist Yahya Sinwar”.
"Just as he refused to declare Hamas a terrorist organization after the October 7 massacre, Guterres is pursuing an extremely anti-Israel and anti-Jewish agenda," the leader wrote on his X social media account.
Sinwar's death occurred on Wednesday, in a chance encounter between Israeli troops and militias in Rafah, south of the Palestinian enclave. According to the Army, no hostages were found with Yahya Sinwar.
The Foreign Minister used his message to reaffirm that Guterres is still designated as 'persona non grata' in Israel, which prohibits him from entering the country.
On October 2, Katz announced that they had decided to declare the UN Secretary-General 'persona non grata' for not "unequivocally" condemning the attack that Iran launched against Israel the previous day, with almost 200 ballistic missiles.
"Anyone who fails to unequivocally condemn Iran's atrocious attack on Israel does not deserve to set foot on Israeli soil. This is an anti-Israel secretary-general who supports terrorists, rapists and murderers," Katz warned in a statement released at the time.
On Thursday, Guterres sent a message of gratitude to the personnel of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and warned that attacking these troops "may constitute a war crime."
"Attacks against United Nations peacekeepers are completely unacceptable. They violate international law and international humanitarian law and may constitute a war crime," he warned, after at least five soldiers were injured in attacks by Israeli troops.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel was doing "everything possible" to avoid harm to peacekeepers, but that the best way to prevent such incidents was to withdraw them from the territory, which would require a Security Council decision.
