Man Rescued After 67 Days Adrift In The Sea Of Okhotsk. Family Members Died

A man of Russian nationality was rescued by authorities in that country on Monday, after spending 67 days adrift in an inflatable boat in the Sea of Okhotsk, in the western Pacific Ocean. Even so, the victim's brother and nephew did not survive the crossing.

The 46-year-old man, who was identified by Russian media as Mikhail Pichugin, was spotted by a fishing vessel, Sky News reported.

In early August, Mikhail was accompanied by his 49-year-old brother and 15-year-old nephew on a whale-watching trip to the Shantar Islands, an archipelago made up of 15 islands in the Russian Far East.

When the trio did not return from Sakhalin Island, searches were carried out without success.

The bodies of the two fatal victims were still on the vessel when the survivor – who weighed only around 50 kilograms – was spotted off the Kamchatka peninsula.

At the moment, it is unknown how the man survived. Even so, the local press said that the 'adventurers' had a small amount of food and around 20 liters of water with them when the vessel's engine failed.

Authorities are investigating.
