An organ donor man who was presumed dead in a US hospital woke up in the operating room as doctors were preparing to remove his organs.
The story is told by several hospital employees, who claim to have been traumatized by the situation.
Thomas 'TJ' Hoover, 36, was reportedly admitted brain-dead to Baptist Health Richmond hospital in Kentucky, USA, after suffering an overdose in October 2021.
When his body was being taken to the operating room, the family claims that he moved, as if to give them a signal, and the medical team said that it was a spasm, something that was normal.
However, once in the operating room, when the medical team were preparing to start removing the patient's organs, he started screaming and crying.
“It was chaotic. Everyone was very upset,” recalls one of the professionals who witnessed the scene, quoted by the Daily Mail.
The surgery was canceled and many of the staff quit their jobs in the wake of the incident.
After the incident was reported, the hospital in question assured that “patient safety is its priority”, while the local organization responsible for organ donation assured that it does not pressure its partners to make these donations.
Thomas 'TJ' Hoover, on the other hand, currently lives with his sister, who has become his caregiver. Although he survived, the man has had problems with his memory and mobility since the incident.
