The funeral of the legal advisor to Mozambican presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane, who was assassinated on Friday, will take place today in Maputo, amid calls from the politician for mass participation ‘without disturbances’ and from the Bar Association for the class to attend wearing suits.
Elvino Dias was shot dead on Friday in the center of Maputo, along with Paulo Guambe, representative of the Optimistic People for the Development of Mozambique (Podemos), a party that supports Mondlane, and he called on Mozambicans for "mass participation " at the funeral.
"I would really like this youth to go peacefully. Let's not create disturbances, calmly, we will be in force at Elvino Dias' last farewell", appealed Venâncio Mondlane, in a public statement he made on Monday through his social network account.
The Mozambican Bar Association issued a statement setting out a meeting point for lawyers and trainee lawyers to then go to the location of the funeral ceremonies, asking them to attend wearing "professional attire".
The departure of Elvino Dias' body from the morgue at Maputo Central Hospital is scheduled for 8:45 am local time (7:45 am Lisbon), followed by a wake at the Church of Nossa Senhora do Rosário, and the funeral is scheduled for 1 pm: 00 (12pm in Lisbon), at the Michafutene cemetery, in Maputo.
The Mozambican police confirmed to Lusa on Saturday that the vehicle in which they were following Elvino Dias and Paulo Guambe, who were shot dead, was "ambushed".
The crime led Venâncio Mondlane to call for peaceful marches in Mozambique, on Monday, which were dispersed by strong police action, with shots in the air and tear gas, and the comforts caused, according to a hospital source, at least 16 injuries in Maputo .
The police response to the demonstrations was condemned by the international community and there were several calls for restraint from both parties, namely Portugal, the European Union and the African Union.
The general elections on October 9 included the seventh presidential elections, simultaneously with legislative elections and elections for provincial assemblies and governors.
The National Elections Commission (CNE) has 15 days to announce the official results, a date that is Thursday, October 24th, and the Constitutional Council will then be responsible for announcing the results, after also completing the analysis of possible appeals, but without a defined deadline for this purpose.
