Surrogates Could Face Prison Sentence in Cambodia

Thirteen women of Filipino origin are being accused of being surrogates in Cambodia after being hired online. An Interior Ministry official said the women could face prison sentences, reports the Associated Press.

Twenty-four foreign women, 20 of whom were from the Philippines and four Vietnamese, were found by police when they raided a village in Kandal province, near Cambodia's capital. This was stated by the Secretary of State for the Ministry of the Interior, Chou Bun Eng, who leads the country in the fight against human trafficking and sexual exploitation.

Thirteen of the 20 Filipino women were pregnant. The women were charged with violating the law on the suppression of human trafficking and sexual exploitation in court and could be arrested after the babies are born.

In 2016, the law in Cambodia was updated to ban surrogacy. This was because the country had become a notorious destination for foreigners looking for women to give birth to their children.
