The chairman of the African Union (AU) Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, congratulated Donald Trump on his victory in the US presidential elections, which took place on Tuesday, stressing that he hopes for a "constructive relationship" between Africa and the United States.
"Our congratulations to Donald Trump, President-elect, and JD Vance, Vice President-elect, of the United States of America after their electoral victory," Mahamat said on the X social network.
"The African Union Commission looks forward to working together to achieve a constructive relationship between the United States and Africa based on mutual respect, shared global interests and the values of international cooperation," the Chadian politician added.
Many African leaders already congratulated Trump on Wednesday and defended collaboration with the United States, including the Presidents of countries such as South Africa, Nigeria and Kenya.
Republican Donald Trump was elected the 47th president of the United States, having surpassed the 270 votes needed in the electoral college, when the results are still being counted.
Trump also remains ahead of his Democratic opponent in the popular vote, with 50.9% against 47.6% for Kamala Harris.
The Republican Party also recovered the Senate by surpassing the mark of 51 elected representatives, while in the Chamber of Deputies it is also ahead in the count with 205 mandates, just 13 short of a majority.
