Bolsonaro Calls for 'Pacification' in Note Repudiating Attack in Brasilia

Former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) published a note on Thursday morning (14) condemning the attack in Brasília (DF). On Wednesday night (13), Francisco Wanderley Luiz, 59, died after causing his car to explode and throwing bombs at the headquarters of the Supreme Federal Court (STF). The Federal Police (PF) are investigating the case in collaboration with the DF police.

The text published by the former president's X profile (former Twitter account) laments the incident, calling it an “isolated incident” and motivated by “mental health problems” of the perpetrator of the attack. Bolsonaro's statement emphasizes the “fundamental role” of political institutions and calls for “national pacification.”

“It is high time for Brazil to once again cultivate an environment that is conducive to peaceful confrontation between different ideas,” says the statement published by the former president's profile. “Institutions play a fundamental role in building this dialogue and this environment of unity.”

To the Metrópoles portal, Jair Bolsonaro called the man who died after explosions in Praça dos Três Poderes “crazy” and said he had “no idea” who Francisco Luiz was, suggesting that the perpetrator of the attack could have “left something written or recorded” about a possible terrorist intention.

The former president's hypothesis is confirmed by the posts available on Francisco Luiz's social media profiles. “Dad, Uncle França is not a terrorist, right? (…) He just set off some fireworks to celebrate the 13th,” says a text published by the businessman hours before his death, referring to the date of this Tuesday.

The 59-year-old from Santa Catarina was a businessman in the events sector. In the 2020 elections, he ran for city councilor in Rio do Sul-SC, for the PL. The party that currently houses former president Jair Bolsonaro. However, at the time of his candidacy, the PL did not have Bolsonaro on its roster. The former president only joined Valdemar Costa Neto's party in 2021.
