Europeans Access Illegal Content on the Internet Ten Times a Month

Europeans access illegal content on the Internet on average ten times a month, a number considered high for online piracy, according to a report from the European Union Intellectual Property Office (Euipo) today.

The value is similar to that of 2023 and reflects that the trend is observed in all categories of digital content, except in the case of publications, where piracy decreased, and music, which increased compared to the previous year, is noted in the document of Euipo, based in Alicante.

The study concluded that television content represents half of European users' access to pirated content (five times a month), while access to films reduced to 0.71 per user, music content increased slightly to 0.64, with the ' ripping' (downloading streaming content) is the most common method.

Publication piracy remained stable, with 2.7 hits per user, with downloading being the main method and manga being the most sought after content, especially on mobile devices.

In terms of global piracy, Internet users accessing illegal content at rates lower than the European Union average are from Austria (8.9), Spain (8.5), Poland (8.3), Romania (7.9 ), Germany (7.7) and Italy (7.3), the study indicated.

Portuguese João Negrão, executive director of Euipo, said: "It is imperative to address the causes of this behavior, which often results from a lack of access to legal content at affordable prices and the need for greater public awareness of the consequences of piracy.
