TikTok Will Ban Beauty Filters for People Under 18

TikTok has announced that it will ban the use of beauty filters on users aged between 13 and 17.

Although this measure is a response to legislation in the European Union and the United Kingdom, it is known that it will be applied worldwide. As The Guardian reports, these underage users will not be able to use filters to (for example) enlarge eyes and lips or soften skin tone.

It says that the filters affected are those that change the face “in a way that makeup can't do”.

The aim of this measure is not to negatively impact self-confidence with unrealistic images, something that is enhanced with this type of filter. A body image expert from the University of New South Wales in Australia, Jasmine Fardouly, even points to studies that prove this damage.

“[These filters] promote an ideal of beauty that is not attainable for you. In fact, it's not attainable for anyone, because no one is like that. Everyone's face is being made to look exactly the same,” notes Fardouly. “The fact that it's harder to know that it's a filter could potentially be worse for the promotion of these ideals.”
