Israeli Attack in Lebanon Kills Three People and Wounds UN Soldiers

Five Malaysian peacekeepers and three Lebanese soldiers were wounded in an Israeli attack in Saida, southern Lebanon, the United Nations Interim Force for Lebanon (UNIFIL) said today, in an Israeli attack that killed three people.

"This afternoon, a UNIFIL convoy was carrying newly arrived peacekeepers in southern Lebanon when a drone attack occurred nearby. Five peacekeepers were slightly injured and were treated on site by the Lebanese Red Cross," the force said in a statement.

The Lebanese army said three of its soldiers were also wounded and that three people who were travelling in a vehicle targeted in the Israeli attack died.

UNIFIL said the soldiers would remain on duty and reiterated that "all actors [in the conflict between Israel and the Lebanese Shiite movement Hezbollah] are obliged to avoid actions that endanger peacekeepers or civilians."

According to the Lebanese military, the attack “targeted a vehicle and left three passengers dead” as the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) convoy passed through a Lebanese Armed Forces checkpoint.

The Lebanese National Information Agency reported an “enemy attack on a vehicle” at the entrance to Saida, the main city in southern Lebanon.

The attack prompted security forces to cut off traffic in the surrounding area, while Lebanese Red Cross personnel rushed to the scene to transport the injured to various hospitals.
