Kyiv Denounces "Massive Attack" on Energy Infrastructure

Ukraine reported a "massive attack" on energy infrastructure this morning, with the authorities deciding to cut off electricity, particularly in Kyiv, at a time when Moscow is stepping up military pressure on the country.

With temperatures hovering around 0°C, "once again, the energy sector has been subjected to a massive enemy attack", the Energy Ministry said on the social network Facebook.

Emergency power cuts were carried out mainly in Kyiv (north-central), Odessa (south) and Dnipro (east), according to the Ukrainian operator DTEK.

In addition, an air alert was activated throughout the country, with the Ukrainian air force reporting missile attacks targeting mainly the regions of Odessa, Kherson, Mykolaiv (south) and Kirovograd (centre).

On Tuesday, Moscow announced "a response" to two new Ukrainian attacks with US ATACMS missiles against Russian territory in the previous days.

Russia has been bombing civilian areas across Ukraine since its invasion of the country began in February 2022, and has stepped up its strikes as winter approaches, targeting energy infrastructure in particular.

The Russian Defense Ministry said it destroyed 25 Ukrainian drones overnight over the Bryansk region, near Belarus, Crimea and the southern Rostov region.

On the front lines, Moscow is making territorial gains against a weakened Ukrainian army less than two months before the inauguration of the next US president, Donald Trump.

The administration of outgoing President Joe Biden on Wednesday called on Kyiv to lower the minimum age for military deployment to 18 from the current 25 to make up for a shortage of troops in the face of advancing Russian forces on the ground.

The call comes as Trump may adopt a new approach and push Kyiv into negotiations with Moscow.
