The President of the Republic of Mozambique, Filipe Nyusi, today called for an end to the destruction of public and private infrastructure and the deaths of police officers and civilians during demonstrations called by presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane.
"We will stop the destruction, we will need to and we will have a guilty conscience for what we should have allowed to develop and did not, because there are countries that no longer know and have no way out because they have plunged into chaos and there is only death, destruction and looting", said the Mozambican President during the inauguration of a facility of the National Institute of Social Security, in the province of Gaza, in the south of the country.
"It is not right that people are dying because they were violated by the Defence and Security Forces or vice versa, but I believe that you will do your part, if each one of us does a little of what we can do, this will stop", added the Mozambican head of state.
Nyusi stated that Mozambicans need to keep a "cool head" to resolve the post-election tension, asking them to look at the country "with affection" and pointing out that it is "envied" due to the resources it has.
"If this country were nothing, no one would care, no one would plant corn in the sand, no one. It won't germinate. Since it is a fertile land, you young people have to do your part", declared the Mozambican President, asking citizens to focus on the country's development.
"I entered Gaza without many schools, without many hospitals, without much water, without electricity and without roads. I have the impression that people forget quickly, but time is responsible for bringing justice to all Mozambicans who work for it and Gaza is one of the provinces that does so much for this", concluded Filipe Nyusi.
At least six people were injured, including a young woman run over by soldiers, during clashes between protesters and police on Wednesday, in protests called by presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane, Maputo Central Hospital announced.
The Mozambique Armed Defence Forces (FADM) admitted on Wednesday that they had run over a young woman in the Mozambican capital, clarifying that the vehicle was "on a mission to protect economic objects" against protesters and that the victim was rescued.
At least three people died and five others were injured due to gunfire on Wednesday in Mozambique during protests contesting the election results, the Mozambican Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) Electoral Platform Decide said.
On Tuesday, presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane had appealed to the Mozambican population to leave their cars on the streets with signs protesting the election from 8:00 am until they returned from work for three days, starting on Wednesday.
Venâncio Mondlane has called for these demonstrations, which have degenerated into clashes with the police and resulted in around 70 deaths and more than 200 injuries, as a way of contesting the awarding of victory to Daniel Chapo, a candidate supported by the Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo, in power), with 70.67% of the votes, according to the results announced on October 24 by the National Elections Commission (CNE), which have yet to be validated and proclaimed by the Constitutional Council.
