The confirmed death toll from the floods of October 29 in Spain has risen to 219 and authorities have recorded 93 missing people, according to the most recent official figures.
The previous official figures were 217 dead and 89 missing.
The majority of fatalities are from the autonomous region of Valencia, in eastern Spain, where 211 deaths have been confirmed.
In the region of Castile-La Mancha, in a neighboring area of Valencia, seven more people have died and there is also one fatality from last week's storm in Andalusia, in the south of the country.
These figures were confirmed on Wednesday night by the Spanish Minister of Internal Affairs, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, in an interview with Cadena Ser radio.
As for the number of missing people, authorities said that as of 8:00 pm on Wednesday there were 93 confirmed cases and registered by the mixed teams of police and forensic doctors set up for this specific purpose.
These missing persons cases correspond exclusively to reports in which family members have provided information about the people they are looking for, as well as biological samples that will later allow the identification of the victims, should the bodies be found, according to the High Court of Justice of the Valencian Community, under whose supervision is the Data Integration Centre (CID), a structure that works in cases such as last week's storm.
According to the CID, the total number of missing persons in the floods may continue to change, as some cases may not have yet been reported and there are currently 54 unidentified bodies in Valencia morgues, whose data is being cross-referenced with that of the missing persons.
Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska stressed that the data relating to the missing persons is "of the utmost sensitivity" and information can only be released through the CID, based on "objective data", highlighting that this is also the way to combat misinformation and false rumors that are circulating on social media and other channels related to the floods.
