Xi Jinping Congratulates Sandu On Re-election After Contested Result

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday congratulated the current President of Moldova, Maia Sandu, on her re-election after Sunday's elections, which were contested by the opposition and the Kremlin.

In a telephone conversation, Xi said that China and Moldova are “traditional and friendly partners” and that in recent years “bilateral relations have maintained stable development”, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a brief statement released today.

“I attach great importance to the development of relations between China and Moldova and I am ready to work with the president to steer bilateral relations towards stable and long-term development,” added the Chinese leader.

Sandu, who accused Russia of trying to destabilize the situation in his country - Ukraine's neighbor - with various hybrid attacks, won the second round of the presidential elections on Sunday with 55.33% of the vote against 44.67% for Alexandr Stoianoglo, considered the Kremlin's candidate.

As in the first presidential round and the pro-European referendum on October 20, the 300,000 Moldovans who voted abroad tipped the balance.

Sandu, whose country began negotiations to join the European Union in December 2023, was congratulated by European leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
