Betinho, the Scout Who Discovered Neymar Jr., Has Died

Betinho, the scout responsible for discovering Neymar Jr. when he was still a child, died this Saturday (7). The coach died at home after suffering a sudden illness. The family has not yet released details about the burial.

Neymar shared a beautiful tribute to his friend on his Instagram account and highlighted the importance of the professional in his life. “You saw me running in the stands and made me run in several stadiums around the world. You got me into soccer, made my parents take me to my first tryout. I will always be grateful for that! Take care of us up there. Rest in peace, Professor Betinho,” wrote the player in the caption, along with a photo next to the coach.

The soccer player's father also paid tribute to Betinho on his profile and thanked him for his great participation in the career of his son, who currently plays for Al-Hilal. “Today a part of our history has left us… I would like to express my gratitude to Professor Betinho, without him my son’s (and my family’s) story would be different… to your family, know that you will always have a friend here,” wrote Neymar Sr.

In addition to Neymar Jr, the former Santos scout also discovered famous players such as Gabriel Barbosa, known as Gabigol, who plays for Flamengo, and Robson de Souza, known as Robinho.

Coach Betinho and Neymar Jr met in 1998, on the sands of Itararé beach, in Santos, on the coast of São Paulo. In a post shared by the professional in October of this year, the story between him and the Al-Hilal athlete was explained in detail.

“I remember that day clearly. Neymar Sr. was playing a friendly match with friends when, as he ran after the ball, I couldn't help but notice a little boy of just six years old, vibrant and full of energy, who stood out in the stands. It was Neymar Jr. He ran from one side to the other, watching the game with a speed and agility that left me amazed. When I saw that boy in action, I thought: 'This kid has something special'”, he said in part.
