Explosion At Florence Refinery Kills At Least Two



A powerful explosion at a refinery near the Italian city of Florence has left at least two people dead and several injured.


The accident happened at an energy plant belonging to the Eni company, in the town of Calenzano.


According to the local mayor, Eugenio Giani, four people are still missing, but these figures could change.


“All of Tuscany is united in sorrow at the tragedy that occurred today in Calenzano,” said the same official, who added to the press that ‘all hospitals and emergency rooms have been put on alert’ in view of the possibility of more victims.

Dario Nardella, an MEP for the European People's Party (Christian Democrats) and former mayor of Florence, told Il Reppublica that “the situation is very serious and we are very worried”.

The same source said that “the entire regional medical emergency system is constantly engaged in rescue operations, together with the fire department and police forces”.
