Seven out of ten South Koreans support the opposition's motion to impeach President Yoon Suk-yeol after he declared martial law, according to a Realmeter poll today.
According to the poll, 73.6% of South Koreans support the parliamentary process that could lead to the suspension of Yoon's exercise of power, who on Tuesday declared martial law to protect the "constitutional order" against "anti-state" activities and "pro-North Korean forces".
The martial law was revoked in parliament about six hours after it was announced.
On the other hand, 24% of citizens reject the motion, presented on Wednesday by six parliamentary groups - including the main opposition party, the liberal Democratic Party (DP) of Lee Jae-myung - who annulled Yoon's state of emergency and have now counterattacked, starting the process of impeachment of the President.
When asked whether Yoon's actions could "constitute treason," 70 percent of respondents said yes, compared with 25 percent who said no.
The poll, which has a margin of error of about 4.4 percent and a confidence level of 95 percent, surveyed 504 people over the age of 18.
The motion's sponsors argued that Yoon violated the Constitution and other laws by declaring martial law, and have announced that they will vote on the proposal on Saturday.
To pass, the motion needs the support of at least 200 of the 300 seats that make up South Korea's unicameral legislature.
