Ukraine: Ship With Military Equipment Runs Aground Off Norwegian Coast

A ship loaded with weapons destined for a Polish logistics platform important for delivering military aid to Ukraine ran aground on Thursday off the Norwegian coast, local authorities said today.

On Thursday night, a civilian ship carrying a piece of Norwegian equipment, the 'Finlandia Seaways', hit the seabed in southwestern Norway.

"The ship hit a sandbank and suffered damage to the rudder and propeller. It had to be assisted by tugboats to be brought to the side," Thomas Breivoll, spokesman for the Sola salvage center, told French news agency AFP ( southwest), who added that "there was nothing dramatic".

The equipment on board the "Finlandia Seaways" will have to be transferred to another ship and the grounding "will undoubtedly cause a slight delay", the spokesman for the Joint Headquarters of the Norwegian Armed Forces, Hanne Olafsen, admitted to AFP.

This logistics center in southeastern Poland is the transit point for much of Western military aid destined for Ukraine, which has been fighting the Russian invasion since February 2022.

The Norwegian Defense Minister announced earlier this week the deployment of F-35 fighter jets, a NASAMS air defense system and around 100 soldiers to protect the center of Rzeszow.
