Etihad Airways Plane Tires Explode During Takeoff In Australia

The tires on two wheels of an Etihad Airways plane from the United Arab Emirates exploded on Sunday evening during take-off at Melbourne airport in Australia.

Flight EY461, which was on its way to Abu Dhabi with almost 300 passengers, had to be canceled.

There are several videos circulating on social media showing the plane on the runway, surrounded by fire engines.

One of the passengers on board, quoted by the British website Daily Mail, said that the pilot “had to use the emergency brakes” after the landing gear “apparently caught fire”.

After the incident, the Boeing 787 suffered damage to both wheels and remained on the runway, which is still closed, throughout Sunday night.

However, no injuries were reported and all the passengers got off the plane safely.

“The flight crew decided to stop the take-off for technical reasons. The plane was stopped safely on the runway and the emergency services attended as a precaution. Firefighters applied foam to the plane's landing gear tires, which is a routine precaution after a high-speed rejected take-off,” an Etihad Airways spokesperson explained to Daily Mail Australia.

Melbourne airport ended up experiencing considerable delays in the departures and arrivals of other flights.
